Lab 2 - General question cont.

5. Based on your initial experience with ArcGIS, describe how ArcMap and ArcCatalog interact / complement one another in performing fundamental GIS functions. List which of the five functions of a GIS (see last week's lecture) each program is intended to address (you will list some functions for both).

Data entry: load/input data and map in ArcMap/ArcCatalog.

Editing: Rename, rearrange or create data or layer.

Data Management: use ArcCatalog to make tree diagram for management different types of data.

Analysis: combine data/layer on map and understand meaning of data.

Output: printing a paper map or saving as a electronic picture to show the result.

Program Crash

When I finish chapter 4 and try to save my data:

A window prompt after few seconds the program makes saving...

Even this program has re-installed and I am use student evaluation license, v10.1 may still have problem. I am not sure will it happen again in future work...

•General
1. Open ArcGIS from the Windows Start Menu under Programs. List the programs you see. (hint:
anything beginning with 'Arc')

2. What general tasks are ArcMap and ArcCatalog designed to perform?
ArcMap is the application for making maps and analyzing data.
ArcCatalog is an application for managing geographic data.

3. Locate the ArcToolbox and briefly describe it's general structure. Then locate the Toolbar menu
from the Customize menu (Customize --> Toolbar)
ArcToolbox is under “Geoprocessing” menu. It contains many tools for ArcMap such as Analysis, Conversion, Geocoding, Server and Spatial Analyst/Statistic...etc.

Lab 1 - III. Online Mapping.

Find three maps on the internet

A.

Source of map A. from Formosa (Taiwan) City Plans

This is one of series map created in 1945 by U.S. Army Air Force in Pacific theater for description cities of Imperial Japan administrated Taiwan Island. U.S. Army Air Force highly dependent on aerial photograph to gain detail of targets such as garrison, factory, government office, rail station and airfield...etc. Many of the street pattern still identifiable on today's satellite map and find where are high probability of unexposed bomb that dropped from U.S. Army Air Force.

B.

Second of map B. from wikipedia.org 台灣地圖史.

Original source titles as “old art in 1928/01/03 Taiwan daily News ”. The map includes railroad route, cities, and famous tourism attractions such as eight scenery place and twelve mountains. Highest mountain names Niitakayama (Today's Yushan) in Japanese style. Creating this map requires a newspaper agency to collect data from official's railroad department and tourism places. This requires men powers on late 20s and 30s.

 C.

Third map from one of maps on L.A. Metro "Past Visions of L.A.'s Transportation Future."

This map notes early planning of create Mass Rapit Transit for Great Los Angeles. Some of the route and city stations constructed under today's Metro rail system and some of them only exist on planning. My home Cerritos never have any train station but still have connect by Long Beach Transit bus route to Metro Norwalk station. One of route from Universal city to Canoga Park was realized under Metro Orange Line Rapit Bus. Surly City of Los Angeles spent money to palnning train system even thought put money on motor transportation and highway construction more cheaper on that age...
